COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR W. RICHARD KYZER II

Army National Guard State Command Sergeant Major

Command Sergeant Major W. Richard Kyzer II serves as the 13th South Carolina Army National Guard state command sergeant major.  He was selected for this position February 2021.  In this role, CSM Kyzer is the advisor to the assistant adjutant general-Army, the South Carolina National Guard command senior enlisted leader, and other key leaders on matters of health and welfare of the Soldiers assigned to the South Carolina Army National Guard. 
 
CSM Kyzer enlisted 27 July 1990 in the U.S. Army active duty component where he served as fire support specialist (13F) while stationed in Nuremburg, Germany.  CSM Kyzer was assigned to the 6th Regiment of the 1st Field Artillery as part of the 1st Armored Division.  He served on active duty until 13 January 1993 before becoming a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard.  CSM Kyzer continued his service as part of the 1st Battalion 178th Field Artillery.  On 23 November 1998, CSM Kyzer was selected to join the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) program as a training and administrative sergeant and reclassified to a cannon crew member (13B) as a Howitzer section chief.  CSM Kyzer was selected to join Task Force Victory as part of Operation Noble Eagle from 5 February 2003 to 5 February 2005 as an administrative sergeant (71B).  Upon completion of his mobilization, CSM Kyzer was assigned to the 228th Signal Brigade as the senior human resources non-commissioned officer (NCO) (42A) and later the Headquarters and Headquarters Company readiness NCO (25W and 25B).  On 24 August 2009, Kyzer transferred to the 263d Army Air and Missile Defense Command as a senior human resources NCO (42A).  On 1 May 2016, CSM Kyzer was selected to be the State’s AGR Branch sergeant major.  On 1 October 2017, he was selected as the first command sergeant major of the 125th Cyber Protection Battalion and deployed concurrently as the Task Force Echo command sergeant major.  On 25 March 2020, Kyzer was selected as the 228th Tactical Theater Signal Brigade command sergeant major while also serving as the state human resources sergeant major of the Deputy Chief of Staff – Personnel Directorate (G-1) of Joint Forces Headquarters.
 
Command Sergeant Major Kyzer has served as a fire support team chief, Howitzer section chief, platoon sergeant, personnel section sergeant, information systems staff NCO, brigade plans and operations sergeant, first sergeant, senior human resources NCO for a two-star command, sergeant major for the Human Resources office in the AGR Branch, command sergeant major of a Cyber Protection Battalion and Signal Brigade, and sergeant major for the state Personnel Directorate.  He is married to Amanda Kyzer, and live in Greer, South Carolina with their son Will.
