Major General Robin B. Stilwell is a native of Greenville, South Carolina. He began his military service by enrolling in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at The Citadel in 1985. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Infantry officer and was assigned as a platoon leader in Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment, St. George, South Carolina. He thereafter served in the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in various capacities including Chief of Staff, S3 (Operations Officer), and Commander. He deployed to Afghanistan as an Embedded Team Trainer (ETT) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 2007 to 2008. He again deployed to Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guardian from 2012 to 2013, where he served as Chief of Staff of Multinational Battle Group - East. He deployed to Kuwait from 2020 to 2021 as the Deputy Chief of Staff (FWD) for U.S. Army Central Command. Stilwell commanded the 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry Regiment, headquartered in Union, South Carolina, the 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade located in Eastover, South Carolina, and the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in Charleston, South Carolina. Most recently, Stilwell served simultaneously as the Deputy Commanding General for Reserve Affairs at the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, and as Director of the Joint Staff of the South Carolina National Guard.
Stilwell’s awards include: Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star; Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star; Kosovo Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal; Armed Forces Medal with “M” Device; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon with Bronze hourglass; Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon; NATO Medal; the Combat Infantry Badge; the Parachute Badge; and the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge.
In his civilian career, Stilwell is a Circuit Court Judge for the State of South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from The Citadel, a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina, and a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Stilwell is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Army War College and is a Level III, joint qualified officer. He has served on various boards in the community and is a Liberty Fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
Stilwell is married to Charlotte Whelan Stilwell and has three children: Eli, Dee, and Joseph.
