Purpose and Scope

Retirement Services Offices provide crucial retirement counseling and pre-retirement services to Soldiers and their Families to aid them in making timely and informed decisions regarding their entitlements and benefits.

Retirement Services Offices personnel are trained to provide quality pre-retirement services counseling to all retiring and Retired Soldiers, surviving spouses and their Families. In addition to counseling, RSOs provide post-retirement services to retired Soldiers and surviving spouses.

Pre-Retirement

The G1 conducts pre-retirement seminars a minimum of four times annually.

Available to members within 2 years of retirement eligibility, these interactive presentations can vary from 2–4 hours, with the 4-hour format providing the most comprehensive information.

Gray Area

Identification (ID) cards reflecting Retired Reserve (without pay) status for the individual and eligible family members will be issued at any ID card-issuing facility upon presentation of NOE and transfer orders to the Retired Reserve (without pay).

The Reservist will receive a DD Form 2 (Red) ID card, while eligible Family members receive the DD Form 1173-1 (Red) ID card.

Entry into the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) is essential for proper eligibility verification and future ID card renewal/status changes. Once eligible to receive pay, it will be necessary to report to any ID card-issuing facility in order to receive the DD Form 2 (Blue) ID card and Family members will receive the DD Form 1173-1 (Tan) ID card

Post-Retirement

You can request retirement from your Military Personnel Office when you have 20 years of credible service.

Qualified ARNG personnel retire and begin to draw retired pay at age 60, or any date thereafter that. Due to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, “REDUCED AGE RETIREMENT”, qualified personnel may retire under the age of 60, however not less than 50.

However, eligibility for Tricare will not start until age 60.
