U.S. Army Soldiers from the Det. 1, 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, 59th Aviation Troop Command, South Carolina Army National Guard, fly a relief mission across the South-North Carolinas border, aboard a CH-47F Chinook helicopter, during post hurricane Helene response operations, western North Carolina, Oct. 5, 2024. The mission was flown from Greenville, South Carolina, as part of a multi-state, relief effort to provide aid to communities that have become isolated in the aftermath of hurricane Helene. Helene made landfall on Sept. 26, in Florida, as a category 4 hurricane. The storm caused historical-level floodings in western North Carolina and widespread power outages affecting over 1.2 million people in South Carolina, and over 3 million across Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The South Carolina National Guard continues to respond to disaster relief requests for assistance from federal, local, and state agencies. U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers and helicopters from three states assigned to Task Force Aviation, South Carolina Army National Guard, fly relief missions across the South-North Carolinas border, in support of emergency-response operations post hurricane Helene, Western North Carolina, Oct. 2-5, 2024. Task Force Aviation included crews and aircraft from Florida, New York, and South Carolina. The missions were flown daily from Greenville, South Carolina, as part of a multi-state, relief effort to provide aid to communities that have become isolated in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Helene made landfall on Sept. 26, in Florida, as a category 4 hurricane. The storm caused historical-level floodings in western North Carolina and power outages affecting over 1.2 million people in South Carolina, and over 3 million across Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Soldiers assigned to Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 263rd Air Defense Artillery Battalion (ADA BN), 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC), South Carolina Army National Guard, held a deployment departure ceremony on Oct. 19, 2024, at the Easley Readiness Center, Easley, South Carolina. This event marks the unit's preparation for deployment in support of Operation Inherit Freedom.

U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers with the 1055th Transportation Company, South Carolina National Guard, held a deployment ceremony Oct. 27, 2024, at McCrady Training Center, in Eastover, South Carolina. More than 100 Guardsmen will deploy to support the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to assist with border security operations. The Department of Defense has supported the Department of Homeland Security’s border security in 19 of the last 23 years. The mission enables CBP to address security challenges and conduct its mission more efficiently along the southwest border. A company of approximately 120 South Carolina Army National Guardsmen assigned to the 1055th Transportation Company, 59th Troop Command, headquartered in Laurens, will deploy at the end of October for approximately 12 months supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection as part of the federal Southwest Border Mission.

U.S. Soldiers assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, South Carolina Army National Guard, assist emergency response teams the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Greenville, South Carolina, Sept. 30, 2024. The engineers provide additional, removal, reduction and disposal of debris capabilities to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. Helene made landfall on Sept. 26, 2024, in Florida as a category 4 hurricane. The storm caused an unprecedented number of power outages affecting over 1.2 million people in South Carolina, and over 3 million across Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. What began as a routine drive to Charleston, South Carolina, turned into a harrowing encounter on Friday, October 4, 2024, for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Cooke and his girlfriend, Haley Heskett. The couple, traveling on I-26 around 3:30 PM, found themselves in a dangerous situation when an erratic driver began swerving unpredictably, endangering others on the road.

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- When Tropical Storm Helene hit South Carolina, it brought widespread damage and left communities like Gaffney, South Carolina, grappling with power outages, flooding, and a shortage of basic necessities. Amid the chaos, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kevin Garcia, a Gaffney resident himself, stepped in to serve his neighbors in a unique capacity — both as a protector and a community member.

The South Carolina Army National Guard's 124th Engineer Company, part of the 122nd Engineer Battalion and 117th Engineer Brigade, was activated on Aug. 5, 2024 for State Active Duty ahead of Tropical Storm Debby. The unit, comprising around 15 soldiers, is deploying to Bluffton, SC, to facilitate infrastructure recovery by clearing road and path obstacles. Their deployment includes LMTVs, wreckers, generators, fuel, water, and food supplies to ensure operational effectiveness and community support. (U.S. Army National Guard video by Spc. Turner Horton)

On this episode of the Palmetto Guardian Staff Sgt. Chelsea Weaver aka Hollywood, heads to the field to cover the Child and Youth Program 2024 Youth Camp. She talks with campers, junior/senior counselors and staff about their experience during the week long camp. They dive into their favorite activities, what they look forward to most next year and a little advice to those future first time campers. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the SCNG child and youth programs hosting the youth camp at Camp Bob Cooper. The Palmetto Guardian is hosted by Staff Sgt.
