SCNG State Command Sergeant Major


Command Sergeant Major Vickery enlisted in the South Carolina Army National Guard (SCARNG) in July 1983, in Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 2-263d, Air Defense Artillery Battalion, Anderson, South Carolina as a Ground Aircraft Observer in the Intelligence Section. Since enlisting, he has served in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility to include Team Leader, Section Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Intel Master Sergeant, Operations Master Sergeant, First Sergeant of multiple line Batteries and Headquarter units to include the 263d Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC). In June 2011, Command Sergeant Major Vickery assumed responsibilities of 2-263 Air Defense Artillery Battalion. During this tour, he mobilized the battalion to the National Capital Region in support of Operation Noble Eagle from February 2014 to February 2015. This no-fail mission defends the Pillars of Democracy and allows our country’s Senior Leaders to operate freely in the National Capital Region. While serving in the National Capital Region, he was selected to serve as the first Command Sergeant Major of the newly formed 678th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the only Fires Brigade concept in the United States Army inventory. He successfully coordinated with the Fires Center of Excellence, Fort Sill, the first ever 14G1O (Air Defense Battle Management Systems Operator Course) MOS-T Mobile Training Team (MTT) to staff the new Brigade Headquarters. Command Sergeant Major Vickery’s selection by The Adjutant General to serve as the 12th State Command Sergeant Major of the Army and Air National Guard for the great State of South Carolina is his culminating assignment to continue serving Soldiers, Airmen, and citizens of this state and nation.

While serving as a Traditional (M-Day) Guardsman, Command Sergeant Major Vickery pursued a career in construction serving in various management positions with Lowe’s Companies Inc. before leaving to become a project manager in the construction industry. In 2004, he started his own company, Russ Vickery Construction, a residential and commercial construction company operating in the upstate of South Carolina. He is a general and residential
contractor and real estate agent.

Command Sergeant Major Vickery is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry and Bertha Vickery of Anderson, South Carolina. He is married to Sandra Vickery for more than 30 years.
