Oct. 5, 2024 | 5:28
U.S. Army Soldiers from the Det. 1, 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, 59th Aviation Troop Command, South Carolina Army National Guard, fly a relief mission across the South-North Carolinas border, aboard a CH-47F Chinook helicopter, during post hurricane Helene response operations, western North Carolina, Oct. 5, 2024. The mission was flown from Greenville, South Carolina, as part of a multi-state, relief effort to provide aid to communities that have become isolated in the aftermath of hurricane Helene. Helene made landfall on Sept. 26, in Florida, as a category 4 hurricane. The storm caused historical-level floodings in western North Carolina and widespread power outages affecting over 1.2 million people in South Carolina, and over 3 million across Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The South Carolina National Guard continues to respond to disaster relief requests for assistance from federal, local, and state agencies.
